Just a Coaster

My oldest son's first house is slowly coming along.  He is starting pretty much from scratch.  His old college apartment stuff just isn't making the grade.  And if you have ever been inside a bunch of college guys apartments you know what I'm talking about.  Sooo - he is very sweet to let me make a thing or two for his new house.  I'm working and struggling with a $25 table from Salvation Army.  Using Annie Sloan Graphite and both clear and dark wax.  It has been a BEAR  (table - not the paint) and I will share that adventure later.
But I have a really quick easy project I made today.
He mentioned he needed some coasters.
I had already made some geeky circuit board ones a while back from some leftover stuff at my hubs plant.  He likes those but I wanted to make something a little different and more personal.  I had several 4" ceramic tiles that I had purchased for 15 cents each (for another project that just didn't happen)  There are many fun ways you can cover them!   I've been seeing some wonderful projects using maps and thought that might be fun.  I love maps and am starting to collect them - old and new, especially nautical ones.
I had an old Atlas on hand so I went to the North Carolina page.  For the first one I cut out the area around Wilmington.  Cut it large enough to cover the tile and wrap it over the sides.

Slapped a little Mod Podge over it and then I basically wrapped it like I would a present.  Sorry - the images aren't the best.
I cut out a piece of thin foam I had on hand for the base.  Really would have rather used thin cork board but I couldn't find it anywhere in all my piles of craft stash.  Guess it's time for messy me to get organized.  :)
Kryloned (s that a word?) this sweetie with clear satin (that's what I had but Gloss would be fun too!)
Well - it is just a coaster but there are so many ways to cover one.  I want to use the Wall Street Journal next, and sheet music and Golf Digest pages and candy wrappers and seed packets and the Sunday Comics and the local grocery brown bags and.........

Update Here!  I found my thin cork and replaced the foam with it.  See?

Plus did I mention he liked it?  And let me show you one of my next projects that my kids think is totally gross!
Why I liked these chairs - I'll never know.  But they are something my Mom would love.  And yes, they are gross, but cheap.  And I LOVE a challenge.  I'm thinking I just might brighten them up and take one to her!
